My cordless drill says it’s got an electric brake as a feature? What’s the brake for?

Narky asked:

I’ve got this exact drill….. (although paid lot lot less than this)

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Makita-Combi-Drill-18V_W0QQitemZ260110664763QQihZ016QQcategoryZ20777QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem#ebayphotohosting

Can you please explain in simple terms why it’s got an electric brake? Surely if I’m drilling in to something difficult I don’t want it to brake to be somehow applied to make it even harder.

Also I need to put up some brackets in the garage, and the garage is made of brick. Would I be able to use this type of cordless drill to drill in to brickwork, or is it not suitable? I don’t want to wreck the drill.

Thanks.

Edith

What is the best 18V lithium-ion cordless drill out now?

Tuesday, April 29th, 2008
rjgiants75 asked:

I originally purchased a Dewalt drill with Nicad batteries. However, after fooling around with the lighter lithium based cordless drill/drivers I’ve decided to go that route.

I’ll be using this drill from everything from hanging blinds to decking. I’m not a contractor but more of a DIY weekend warrior. The one thing that I was concerned about was being able to drill into concrete. Seems like the drill/drivers that have the hammerdrill feature are on the heavy side and I was looking for something lighter. Am I better off just getting a seperate corded hammerdrill or Hilti drill for the very few times that I may need to drill into concrete?

So far I’ve had my eye on Makita’s,Hitatchi,Ridgid to name a few. Can anyone offer some opinions?
Is anyone familiar with Ridgid? They came out with a new 18V lithium with a larger battery than the new compact Makita(black & white). Ridgid offers a lifetime warranty(even on the batteries). I’d like to hear from anyone who has used their tools. The 18V is around 4.5lbs.

It is a Delta drill. The battery is a NiCd and not completely dead. No luck on their website and the store doesn’t carry replacements.

Should you use Makita drill bits with a Makita cordless drill?

Wednesday, April 23rd, 2008
rjgiants75 asked:

In the big box stores I see Dewalt and other brand 70-100 piece drill bit sets for good prices. If I’m using a Makita should I search for Makita bits or would any brand bit work the same?
The main reason I’m curious is because when I was at Home Depot recently, the guy helping me said that the Bosch drills are picky with the fitting of other brand bits. That’s what made me wonder if it applies to Makita too.

Milwaukee cordless drill grip has dissolved to mush, any idea why?

Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008
rennysoncemann asked:

My Milwaukee cordless drill has (had) a rubber coating on the grip. Over time (~8 yrs) this rubber has deteriorated totally, turning to sticky, gummy mush. I had to scrape it all off, otherwise it would turn my hands black every time I use it. The drill hasn’t had a hard life, usually kept in its carrying case in my garage. Has anybody else experienced this? I know a lot of tools have this type of grip so it must work pretty well. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks,

Chris
