I’m trying to use a 4″ hole saw with a cordless drill. How can I cut the hole without the teeth grabbing?

When I use the hole saw with the teeth in a more aggressive “forward” position, they grab and it jerks the drill out. When I reverse the drill I can keep the saw in the hole, but it barely cuts at all. This is a piece of 5/8″ siding I’m trying to cut through if that makes a difference.

You need a lube or cutting oil on it. WD40 is a good one.

Hopefully you still have the pilot bit in the hole saw. If not replace it in the hole saw arbor. Locate a piece of salvage lumber like a 1″x 6″ of pine and drill the 4″ hole into the lumber. Now that you have a 1″x 6″ with a hole in the middle place the 1″x 6″ onto the siding you want to drill and position the hole in the 1″x 6″ over the siding where you want the hole to be. Now clamp the 1″X 6″ in place on the siding and place the hole saw into the 1″X 6″. What you’ve just done was to create a collar or guide to keep the hole saw in place. Next , let the hole saw and pilot bit do the work by maintaining a firm grip on the drill but not placing too much weight behind the drill motor. Good luck.

you probably need a power drill to get more hp behind it. cordless drills are best used as screwdrivers or for drilling small holes.
